I recently bought the new Tobii Eye-X eye tracker to compare it to my current TrackIR 5, given all the fuzz out there. Purchasing it was pretty much straight forward the only interesting thing was that Tobii told me that it would take around two weeks for me to get it, but obviously that wasn't the case as I received it in less than one week, but this is a good thing is it?.
Once received, the packaging was beautiful, instructions pretty much straight forward and from what I could figure (probably the only information missing) Tobii gives you an extra mount, my guess, in case you want to move it to another monitor.
Installation was easy as well, basically in the screen there will be an image with two lines that you need to align with the ones on the upper side of the Tobii Eye-X hardware.
In order to work with Arma 3, or any other game for that matter, you need to download the Infinite Screen Extension software and if like me, that it couldn't find the game location at first, you can browse it. After this is done you are pretty much good to go.
In game, I noticed something right away that I didn't like compared to the TrackIR 5, and it has to do because it's tracking your eyes movement. Every time I wanted to check my ammo, in the left upper right corner, the center of focus will head that way, same thing when checking the score in KOTH at the bottom right (King of the Hill) to the point that I felt nauseous at times. Something similar will happen when using a combo scope like the RCO that has CQB sight and 4X magnification, but in this mode, which is zoomed in, the screen will move continuously giving you that nauseous effect, my guess that this could be fixed by setting some dead-zones which you can do in the settings but it's definitely something that I don't experience with the TrackIR 5.
I also noticed that it will randomly disconnect (USB 3.0 required) and reconnect during game, there's a setting that you need to enable so that when it disconnects it centers the view other wise you are stuck at whatever you were looking once it disconnected (learned this the hard way)
Even at top speed I noticed that side movement still too slow, for example, if someone is coming from your right (3 o'clock) with TrackIR 5, you turn your head and it's almost instantly, but for some reason, again at full speed, with Tobii Eye-X it was fast for every other angle except lateral, and maybe it's a settings thing, but I did noticed that while testing it.
Conclusion, I wouldn't recommend it over TrackIR 5, my own opinion after using it, at least for Arma 3. There's no leaning support, nor zoom in or out, so you will be missing some axis from TrackIR 5.
*Expect a comparison between TrackClip Pro and TrackClip soon as I'm waiting for my TrackClip to arrive.
